ACTION ALERT: Senator Kim Wants to Hear Your Healthcare Story!

Many New Jerseyans, including those with disabilities will see their healthcare cost double or even triple. At the end of December, those who rely on health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will see their premiums increase to over $1000 a year as a result of the tax subsidies expiring.

In addition, under the "Big Beautiful Bill" passed by Congress in July, $880 billion will be cut from Medicaid starting in late 2026. Other changes include updating work requirements and increasing out-of-pocket costs.

New Jersey Snow Removal Law

Winter is coming…

The Alliance Center for Independence (ACI) would like to remind all municipalities about NJ's Snow Removal Law. Businesses in your community need to be aware of this important law!

Passed in 1999, the Snow Removal Law (P.L., 1999, Chapter 182. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-207.9) requires owners and operators of parking lots to remove snow, ice, and other obstructions from accessible parking spaces, access aisles, and curb cuts.

The owners and operators must remove snow and ice within 24 hours of the occurrence or be fined $500 to $1,000. If you see snow or ice obstructing accessible paths of travel to a local business, complain to that business or contact the mayor's office.

ACTION ALERT: Senator Booker wants to hear your SNAP story!

More than 827,000 New Jersey residents (and nearly 4.7 million nationwide) rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) each month to help put food on the table.

But starting November 1st, many SNAP beneficiaries, including people with disabilities and older adults, will face interruption of benefits due to the federal government shutdown.

SNAP helps low-income families afford nutritious food essential to health and well-being. An interruption in these benefits could mean going without meals, cutting back on other essentials, or struggling to reach food pantries.

ACTION ALERT: Tell the Election Assistance Commission to Reject a Proposal Requiring People to Show a Passport to Vote

A message from the American Association of Persons with Disabilities (AAPD)

The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) is considering whether to grant a request from the America First Legal Foundation that would require people to show a passport or other citizenship document when registering to vote.

This change would impact the National Mail Voter Registration form that the EAC maintains and that all states accept for registration for federal elections.

This change would mean that in order to register to vote or even update your voter registration using the National Mail Voter Registration form, you would have to show additional documents that prove you are an American citizen. If this were the law, only a few types of documents would be allowed, such as passports.

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) opposes this policy as it would create additional barriers for disabled voters, who are less likely to have access to the types of documentation required. Additionally, research has repeatedly shown that noncitizens voting is extremely rare and not a systemic issue.

AAPD has submitted a comment urging the EAC to reject this proposal.

We encourage national organizations, state and local coalitions, and individuals to submit comments.

Comments are due October 20, 2025.

ACTION ALERT: Share Your ACA Story! 🚨

As of December 31st, the premium tax credits for enrollees of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace are set to expire. The result will be a premium increase of over $1,000 annually for many consumers.

Nearly 450,000 New Jerseyans get coverage under the ACA. How will the increase in health care coverage premiums affect you?

Senator Cory Booker has asked the ACI to collect stories from people who are impacted by this. How has ACA benefitted you and your family? Will you still be able to afford healthcare after December 31st? How will the healthcare needs of you and your family be impacted if the tax credits are not renewed?

Send your stories to Bianca_Markovski@booker.senate.gov and lkoppisch@adacil.org
