A message from Portlight Strategies and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.
Portlight Strategies, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Charleston, SC, which serves the disaster relief needs of people with disabilities. Founded by people with disabilities in 1997, the scope of work that Portlight Strategies (Portlight) has undertaken has continually grown and evolved. In the past year alone, Portlight has been able to provide services in Mississippi for Hurricane Isaac, Oklahoma for the massive back-to-back tornadoes, and, of course, in New York and New Jersey for Superstorm Sandy.
Last year Portlight Strategies, Inc. organized and hosted the first “Getting It Right” conference in Atlanta, GA to address the needs of people with disabilities during natural disaster situations. The conference was a tremendous success and had over 130 people in attendance. Portlight followed up with a one day workshop in Charleston, SC. Portlight has been heavily involved in the New York, New Jersey area since Superstorm Sandy and the natural next location for the “Getting It Right” Conference is New Jersey.
Portlight is also teaming up with longtime support, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Together we will host a 2 day conference on June 26th and 27th at the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor, in Weehawken, NJ. Representatives from FEMA, the American Red Cross, and natural disaster survivors will be presenting. We will also have panels to discuss shelter and transportation scenarios for natural disasters. Table top exercises, which was the most popular part of the previous conference, will be used to engage attendees to discuss real life natural disaster situations.
Early registration is $175 and will include breakfast, lunch, snacks and all conference material. After May 15th the registration is $195. Go to www.portlight.org to register and learn more information about Portlight Strategies and the “Getting It Right” conference.
